Part 1: God’s Programme: A People, A King and a City
Part 2: God’s Provision: The House of God

The Apostle Paul tells us that ‘Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that . . . through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope’ (Rom 15:4). In that spirit, these two talks focus on some key events in the early history of Israel which stand as pictures or prototypes of precious New Testament truths, thereby increasing our understanding and appreciation of them.

In 1 Chronicles, amidst the great catalogue of names, we see God working to bring out the nation of Israel to be a witness to himself, and in due course the rise of their greatest king, King David, in whose lineage would eventually come the Messiah. We learn of David’s priorities in unifying the nation through its new capital, Jerusalem; making it central to their worship by bringing up the ark of the covenant; and spending his last years preparing for the building of the temple in Solomon’s day. I Kings provides the sequel to the story. In the early years of Solomon’s reign we get a glimpse of future millennial glory; and the house of God which he built has clear and relevant parallels with the house of God that Paul mentions when writing to Timothy, which he describes as ‘the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth’ (1Tim 3:15).
