The Gospel of John

Structure and Meaning in the Fourth Gospel

David Gooding

In his first lecture, Dr Gooding presents his thesis for the structure of John’s Gospel. He shows from the text why he thinks John has arranged his history of Christ’s ministry according to four journeys to Jerusalem and back to Galilee on the occasions of the great Feasts and how that structure carries the meaning that John intended. In his second lecture, he demonstrates the significance of John’s unique presentation by examining the five incidents that occurred over the course of the first journey, how those events advance the main theme of that first section, and what they are saying to us, the readers of John’s Gospel.
