Part 3: Naomi as a Prototype of the Nation of Israel

David Gooding

The story of the Gentile who, coming to faith in God and discovering the great kinsman–redeemer, laid down her very life for the people of God.

Synopsis

Despite its title, the book of Ruth is primarily about Naomi, her desolation and subsequent restoration. Nevertheless it is Ruth who, in God’s purposes, is the key to Naomi’s restoration. This is all the more poignant when we remember that it was Ruth the Gentile who brought blessing to Naomi the Jewess, which stands as a prototype of God’s plans for the future restoration of Israel.

This short and seemingly simple story is in fact a rich mine of biblical truth which can be viewed both historically and prophetically, and as a delightful picture of God’s way of salvation in the person of the kinsman–redeemer.

Recorded at Broadway Hall, Belfast, N Ireland in December 1993.
Length: 71 mins.
