Overview of Matthew’s Gospel

David Gooding

Synopsis

Matthew groups stories together that are carefully chosen and arranged, some of which are unique to him. He tells us about the challenges to his deity that our Lord faced from politics and religion; the rules of the Pharisees and the modernism of the Sadducees. There are the famous narratives about Peter at Caesarea Philippi, and on the Mount of Transfiguration, and in Galilee as he walked on the water.

Matthew’s predominant motive in writing his record is to persuade us to come and take the yoke of Christ. He is king, his yoke is easy, and in coming to him we find rest.
