Its Ruler, Its Love and Its Pressures

Overcoming the World

David Gooding

In the first two of these three studies, Dr Gooding uses Old Testament characters to illustrate aspects of worldliness. In the first, he alludes to Pharaoh as a picture of Satan, the ruler of this world, whose aim is to corrupt our loyalty to the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the second, to illustrate how to overcome the love of the world, he takes us to Genesis. Adam and Eve chose the good things God had given them above God himself; Cain defiantly chose his own way; and the children of Israel lost their faith in God and in Moses, and made themselves other gods.

The third study is based on John’s beautifully arranged First Epistle, and as an antidote to the pressures of the world we shall consider the manifestation of the life of God; the manifestation of the Son of God; and the manifestation of the love of God. We shall be warned against false Christs, false spirits and false gods, and learn that the secret to overcoming the world is that we come to the deep and continuing conviction that Jesus is the Son of God (1 John 5:5).
