Paul’s First Letter to Timothy

David Gooding

The first pressing reason for Paul writing to Timothy was because of the false teachers in the church at Ephesus, who were promoting speculations instead of ministering to people’s faith. Chapters 2–3 are concerned with government in the world and in the church, and how Christians ought to behave.

Paul encourages Timothy to use his gift and train himself in the pursuit of godliness—a key word in the letter, and to show evidence of spiritual progress. Character and roles are also main terms: of God, of the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and of those who profess to follow Christ. The Lord Jesus came into the world to save sinners and to bear witness to the truth. Dr Gooding considers Pilate’s question, ‘What is truth?’
